HomeThe Person of the Year Awards Dinner, which has been organized annually by the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. since 1970, honors two outstanding leaders (one Brazilian and one American) who have been particularly instrumental in forging closer ties between the two nations. Each year over 800 leaders from the international business, financial, and diplomatic communities convene in New York City at this traditional gala to pay tribute to the honorees. There is no financial benefit granted to the recipients of the Person of The Year Awards.

The 2018 Person of the Year Awards Dinner will take place at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Please call the Person of the Year Organizational Committee

Judge Moro became a federal judge in 1996, one year after completing his Bachelor of Law degree at the Maringa State University in his home state of Paraná. He subsequently received a Juris Doctor from the Federal University of Paraná in 2002. Before being called to preside over cases in the Operação Lava Jato, Judge Moro worked on a number of other high-profile cases. Notably, at the request of a justice of the Supreme Court, Dr. Moro served as an auxiliary judge in the Mensalão case, which involved an unprecedented investigation into a vote-buying scheme in the Brazilian Congress that concluded in 2012. Because of his leadership in the Lava Jato case, he was ranked 13th in Fortune's 2016 List of World's Greatest Leaders. He was also in Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People for the same year and in 10th place on Bloomberg Businessweek's list of 50 Most Influential People in the World of Finance. Our choice of Judge Moro is a recognition of his judgement, his perseverance, and his courage in leading the fight against corruption. His efforts have led to the higher ethical and moral standards in business that the Chamber embraces. His application of the rule of law has dramatically improved standards of corporate governance in Brazil and helped to re-establish the country’s international credibility. Following the Person of the Year Awards Gala Dinner, Judge Moro will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Notre Dame and serve as the 2018 commencement speaker.

Michael R. Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who served three terms as Mayor of the City of New York. He grew up in a middle-class home in Medford Massachusetts. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 1966 he was hired by Salomon Brothers, eventually running the firm’s Information Systems. In 1981 Mr. Bloomberg was let go from Salomon in a corporate restructuring and launched Bloomberg LP with his partners in a one room office. Together they built a computer terminal that gave investors real-time access to Treasury bond prices. Today Bloomberg LP is a global company that has more than 19,000 employees in more than 176 locations worldwide. In 2002 he was elected the 108th Mayor of New York City, serving three terms. During his tenure he made many important improvements in the quality of life for the citizens of New York. Upon leaving City Hall at the end of 2013, Michael Bloomberg returned to the company he founded while also devoting more time to philanthropy, which has been a top priority for him throughout his life. In 2014, Bloomberg was appointed U.N. Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and in 2016, Bloomberg began serving as the WHO global ambassador for noncommunicable diseases. Today, Bloomberg Philanthropies employs a unique data-driven approach to global change that has grown out of his experiences as an entrepreneur and mayor. In addition to Bloomberg’s various philanthropic activities, which are directed towards ensuring better, longer lives for the greatest number of people, he has taken The Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate most of their wealth to giving back. The choice of Mr. Bloomberg is a recognition of his direct and indirect involvement in Brazil. The company he founded, Bloomberg LP, has led to a deeper understanding of Brazil by the global business community, through its news and research. Bloomberg Philanthropies has supported a number of important initiatives throughout the world to improve quality of life. Environmentally sustainable growth in large cities, boosting ocean fish populations, reducing road traffic fatalities, and improving public health are some of the global initiatives of his philanthropy in which Brazil is included.

Litigation in Brazil can be costly and time consuming. The new Code of Civil Procedure, which came into effect a little over three years ago, was designed to simplify and shorten the duration of judicial proceedings. Yet not much has been changed for those that need to litigate cases in Brazil. Join us for an overview of Brazil’s current judicial system and proceedings in the areas of civil and tax litigation, including a discussion of the practical implications of the new Code of Civil Procedure for companies doing business in Brazil. Our panel of experts will also address frequently asked questions on topics such as attorney-client privilege, disclosure of evidence, publicity of court records, and the effects of injunctions and orders freezing assets.
